We caught up with legendary British comics creator David Lloyd at last week’s Big Apple Nation Convention in New York City. The veteran artist spoke with us about his new and upcoming projects, including the Absolute Edition of his groundbreaking V for Vendetta! Read on after the jump…
What are you working on right now?
I haven’t decided on it yet. But I’m going to be doing a French series called Men and Gods, which is basically about superheroes in the real world. It’s gonna be written by Jean Pierre Dionnet, who is the esteemed creator of a couple of French magazines, and it looks like it’s going to be a bit pioneering, because it’s gonna be published in France and America simultaneously. In France in album form and here in comic book size – and I think that it will be the first time that’s ever happened in publishing. So I’ll be interested to see how that works out. The story I plan to do is a story which is set in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp. I don’t know the actual details of it yet. But I plan to start that towards the end of this year and it should take me about five to six months to complete. The other thing that I just finished is a short Hellblazer story for a Hellblazer special that’s going out before Christmas. I did that with Jamie Delano. It’s set in and around a poker game and because I know nothing about poker I had to get a lot of reference material. Jamie had to send me diagrams of poker and such to show how the dealer works and how many stacks of poker chips there would be. What a nightmare! [Laughs.]
The Absolute Edition of V for Vendetta – can you talk about what kind of special features might be on that?
There was some of the preparation material I used in the hardback edition – but there is more of that available. There are cover sketches and there is some more preparation material. I’ve yet to see how much I’ve actually got. I have got a lot – what I’d want to use in the Absolute Edition I don’t know.
Do you know when that’ll release?
I do not. I heard about it last night – Scott Nybakken from DC was talking to me about the preparation of it. But I haven’t heard when that’ll happen.
What’s your greatest fear?
Getting killed in a plane crash before I’ve made out my will.
