We Kill You

Today's Indie Toy Spotlight follows the street-artist-turned-toy-maker Justin, owner and creator of We Kill You.  Along with its striking name, We Kill You has designs that revolve around a set of open-mouthed, sharp-toothed monsters.  While these little guys may not necessarily scare the pants off of you, we like the monstrosity of it all.  That's why we've chosen WKY for today's Indie Toy Spotlight.  We chatted with Justin about where his ideas come from, how WKY got its start, its new toy line, and more!  Hit the jump for pictures of all the little monsters and an interview with We Kill You!

We Kill You

Tell Us About We Kill You -  how did it all begin?

We Kill You started as a street art project in about 2003. I was lying in bed and created the six characters you see so often in my work. I thought it would be funny to glue all these creatures to a pillar under the highway near my house so I made my own glue... I loved how it looked, so I started to put up more around the city, and in time found out that this sorta thing was happening all over the world! A couple years into it I started to take old furniture out of garbage and cover it in paint and monsters and put it back on the street at busy intersections. Around the same time as all this, I had started teaching myself screen printing, so I started to make shirts with the logo that was on all my monsters. It's been a few years since that first shirt and now I sell shirts to people all over the world, and this year started to get into making my own toys!

The name We Kill You is definitely an attention grabber. Where did it come from?

Hahaha! Ya, I get that a lot! What the name really comes from is the expression "your killing me," which people will say when they are laughing really hard at something. I'm a really optimistic, positive-thinking person, and when I started WKY I wanted that to reflect on people...hopefully it would put a little smile on your face and brighten your day just a bit! That's why I started it all, to make people smile. Now, with that said, I also understood that a name with the word KILL in it would really grab people's attention, because that word has such strong meaning.

Why monsters?

We Kill You

They are not real and the possibilities of creation are endless. I can have a wolf head with squid tentacles and an elephant's feet and it's awesome! Anything you can think of, anything that exists can be a monster. You can have animal monsters, furniture monsters, tree monsters, anything! They are so fun!

Where is the toy line heading? Can you give us a taste of what's new and what's next?

[In October] I released four new toys, one every week. The four of them are different famous monsters done in my own style, BUT they are good guys! The first was Ghost boy, the second, William Palerne - The Human Wolf. The third is Gonakadet - The Sea Creature, and the last is Padihrshef - The Mummy. These toys have been really well received and have been shipping all over the world!  I have been working on a lot of different textures and trying new things when working on new toys. For the past year and a half I have been really digging a lot of the Japanese fight figure vinyl toys by Secret Base, Gargamel and now the new Snakes of Infinity line by Super 7, so I can see that a lot of my future releases will definitely be influenced by that style. Right now the toys are my favorite thing to do so expect to see a lot in the future!

Which upcoming project excites you most?

Well I have been talking with my friend Heidi, and am trying to get together a small group of people that make their own handmade toys. Like a handmade toy company, no machines attached! I'm really excited about this and everything else about the toys I'm doing right now.

We look forward to more from We Kill You, and we'll keep you up to date on all the latest from this fantastic startup company.  For more info, visit WeKillYou and have a look around!
