We checked out the Repo! Road Tour when it hit our hometown of Philadelphia last night. And who came with it but director Darren Lynn Bousman and the co-creator of the Repo! stage play/star of the Repo! movie Terrence Zdunich! It was a great experience for those who attended, as they were given the chance to shoot some questions at the filmmakers. But the questioning didn’t stop at Repo! No, in fact, Mr. Bousman had a little something to say about his next project. "I’m actually doing an action film next, which is crazy for me," explained the director. "But again it’ll be anything but your typical action film. It’s gonna be my version of an action film which means disturbing, disgusting, wrong…" Those three words were met with great welcome by the crowd who hooped-and-hollered like only the horror set can. Chuckling, Bousman added, "And big musical numbers!"
This is pretty awesome news. The action genre needs something a little different, and it sounds like Bousman has got just that. The coolest action film I’ve seen in a while was Edgar Wright’s Hot Fuzz. Part of the reason I enjoyed that so much was because he created an awesome hybrid of things that make outlandish action films, like Bad Boys or The Transporter great, and a really campy, bloody horror movie. What do you think? Should the DLB take a little vacation from scary movies and try to transfer the things he’s learned to the action genre?
