It sounds like the guys might actually be serious this time... or at least one of them is. Well, sort of.
Paul Stanley recently told Rolling Stone that he was interested in returning to the studio to work on a new KISS album – something the band hasn't done since Psycho Circus over ten years ago – but only if he could be completely in charge. “I would consider doing it if I could do it the way I wanted to do it,” he told the magazine. “I would not be willing to compromise my point of view perhaps as much as I have in recent years.”
His willingness to take on the project has not exactly been shared by fellow bandmate Gene Simmons, who – as you might have noticed lately – enjoys making shitloads of money. Gene lamented the fact that there's just no real incentive to cut a new album anymore, citing the recent web distribution models (employed by bands like Nine Inch Nails and Radiohead) as the death of the old-school methods that made him a very wealthy cat. “There is nothing in me that wants to go in there and do new music,” he told RS. “How are you going to get paid for it if people can just get it for free?” That's our Gene.
Despite this conundrum, the current KISS lineup (Paul, Gene, Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer) do have plans in the works for a 2009 tour. Maybe they'll get the urge again... or maybe they'll just start hating each other. Either way, expect drama... but pray for rock 'n' roll!
