Aronofsky Gets Down and Dirty 'RoboCop'!

Darren Aronofsky is no stranger to grit.  In fact, I’m a firm believer that if we showed Requiem for a Dream in every fifth-grade health class, drugs in this country would become obsolete (and, inherently, jazz music along with them) but then of course you’d have to deal with the fact that YOU’D DRIVEN EVERY CHILD FROM THAT POINT ON BATSHIT CRAZY…  Oh well.  Maybe I’ll look into sending President-Elect Obama a letter about how we could work that out.  Anyway, Aronofsky’s next project is a remake of RoboCop.  And according to the director, he’s not afraid to make the first RoboCop (which narrowly escaped an X-Rating upon its release) look like the Teletubbies Holiday Special.

Sci-Fi Wire just spoke to Aronofsky, who commented on his vision of how he’d like to return Officer Alex J. Murphy to the big-screen.  “If we do it, it [can] definitely be rated R," Aronofsky said. "I mean, [it won't] necessarily, but we have that freedom."  So does that mean Aronofsky’s got the best interests of diehard fans worked into his agenda for the film?  “It's definitely something more for fans," Aronofsky said. "I worked on the film for six years, and it went through a lot of versions. There was one version that was much closer to one of the scripts that we had, and we chose between which way we would go with it. They both are interesting, so I always was curious for myself to see what that alternative version would be."

Sounds exciting, but don’t hold Mr. Aronofsky to anything just yet, per request of the man himself:  "We have a long way to go.  So until there's a screenplay, there's nothing to really talk about. Until we're going, it just doesn't exist for me. It's just like we're trying to get something good, and we'll see what happens."

What do you think?  Is this movie gonna kick ass or what?
