It’s a year that will live on as the year we elected the first US African American president, the year of a near-depression and recessive economic state, the year the Philadelphia Phillies won the World Series and the year that superhero films rocked the box office like they never had before. But here at FEARnet, we took a few minutes to reflect on some of our favorite moments and frankly, they have nothing to do with the aforementioned ’08 memories! While we’re not Oprah or a squealing German child from a Broadway musical, these are a few of our favorite things and we’d like to share them with you, our loyal FEARnettians. Because we’re thinking these memories might be some of your favorites too! Here they are, our Top 8 of ’08 FEARnet Moments in no particular order.
Uwe Boll vs. Internet
He’s gotten in the ring and beaten the bloody hell out of movie critics, basically stood up and said eff you to those who enjoy a decent movie, trash talked Michael Bay via viral video. But most importantly he left his movie-making career in the hands of the vicious online petition community after a snide statement he made to FEARnet in our ’08 interview with Mr. Boll. At a post-Postal screening interview session, FEARnet asked Boll if he was aware of an online petition signed by 18,000 film fans requesting that he stop making movies. The always humble Boll laughed it off claiming 18K was simply not enough. When asked how many it would take, he confidently said, “One million. Now we have a new goal.” While petitioners began to pop out from the woodwork forcing the 18K signatures to quickly climb to over 100,000 within a week, Boll-lovers everywhere also emerged and created their own online petition urging Boll to keep on truckin’ his path of subpar filmmaking. The “Stop Dr. Uwe Boll” petition, which you can still sign, has 319,323 signatures to date. The “Long Live Uwe Boll” petition; a meager 6484 and it’s all because of FEARnet. Looks like there’s more haters than lovers. We’re almost there Uwe… Better watch out!
The Anal Adventures of Marilyn Manson
On the red carpet of the Scream Awards, 2008, FEARnet got an extra special treat from goth-rocker, “blame him for your violent child,” shocktastic and sexually ambiguous Marilyn Manson. In response to a seemingly normal question about his latest album being horror themed Manson replies as only he could, “It sounds like someone ripping your ribcage open and taking a shit in your chest. It’s not meant to be scary – it’s meant to be romantic. But that’s the way we romance women, unfortunately. We think that anal sex is foreplay – it’s not our fault. It’s the way we were raised.” Well wine us and dine us Marilyn, you are one sick—and vastly entertaining--pup…
Cloverfield Monster Claims 2 Of Our Reporters
You thought there was only one side of the Cloverfield story told through the eyes of Hud, Rob and the rest of the victimized crew. But here at FEARnet, we took the story into our own hands! In January 2008, reporters Giaco Furino and Gabrielle DiPietro took a ride on the FEARtrain up to New York City to attend Rob’s goodbye party with the cast and crew of Cloverfield. They may or may not have returned. The video you are about to watch is disturbing. But only in the sense that it’s about 5 minutes of drunken Cloverfield cast chaos…
We Got Down and Dirty with MILFs – Mother’s Day 2008!
The phrase, “Down and dirty on Mother’s Day” may conjure up some unwanted images. But rest assured, we’re not encouraging incestual advances on your dear, sweet ma’. This Mother’s Day, rather than flowers and sunshine, we sent moms everywhere a list to truly honor them. MILF or not. We honored the Moms I Like to FEAR, and whether you’re mom is a MILF in the traditional sense, the FEARnet sense or she’s not a MILF at all she’s damned worth honoring with our list of horror mamas.
66.6 Film Festival
Hosted by Spider, Powerman 5000 frontman and FEARnet’s newest correspondent, our 66.6 Film Festival tore ass through some of our favorite horror films! Nothing was safe from the hand on the fast forward button. Not Roman Polanski’s Rosemary’s Baby or Clive Barker’s Candyman. The best part? In just about 10 minutes, you can watch 10 of your favorite flicks. That or you can watch 10 minutes of your actual favorite movie. But what fun is that. Live a little… Really!
The Year of Clive Barker
Here at FEARnet, we love Clive Barker. Like, a lot. Like, in the way that when we see him, we want to kiss his little face…or just hear about what sorts of amazingly cool projects he’s up to. So we wouldn’t dare pass up an opportunity to join him on a private tour of his work on display at a trendy LA art gallery. Moreover, we wouldn’t dare pass up an opportunity to host the cable premiere AND Internet premiere of Midnight Meat Train on FEARnet On Demand and FEARnet.com. Just after release date changes from the studio and the brief, very limited theatrical run, we ran the film and viewers tuned in by the millions. From the start, we loved the film (enough to put it on our Top 8 of ’08 Movies list) so it’s a good thing that Clive and millions of others loved it too!
30 Days of Night: Dust to Dust Comic Book
In 2007, FEARnet brought you 30 Days of Night: Blood Trails. In 2008, we brought you 30 Days of Night: Dust to Dust starring Shawnee Smith, Ken Foree and Ted Raimi. And that’s all well and good. But what really tickled our fancy this year was the 30 Days of Night: Dust to Dust comic we premiered at Comic Con International 2008 as a convention exclusive! With cover art by Ben Templesmith (original artist of the 30 Days of Night graphic novel) and with Steve Niles acting as Producer, the comic quickly became a hot item at Comic Con clearing off the tables as soon as they were put out! If you were lucky enough to grab one, you know the drill. If not, you can take a little look at some of the cells here!
Death March: Tournament of Blood
As a reprised web event from 2007 (then called March Massacre), FEARnet did the impossible and the anticipated. We pitted our favorite horror icons against one another in a fight to the death and allowed you, our loyal users to vote on it. The results? Pinhead and his Cenobite pals won triumphantly while chains and hooks were slung victoriously! Whether your voting strategy be to weigh out on strength or mental ability, truth be told, we always end up picking our favorite genre icons anyway, whether we admit it or not! Not that there’s anything wrong with that….
There ya’ have it FEARnettians, our Top 8 of ’08 FEARnet Moments. Happy New Year and look for more memorable moments with FEARnet in ’09!
