These tough economic times are hitting everyone folks. Well, except for Paramount who has gone on a rampage to help theaters nationwide convert to 3D screens in time for Monsters vs. Aliens 3D! But what does this mean for genre fans who, like I, had to travel far beyond my means (really just to New Jersey. It was grueling.) just to see My Bloody Valentine on a 3D screen? It means, cele-frakkin-bration! With six genre films releasing in 3D this year—My Bloody Valentine, Final Destination 4, Monsters vs. Aliens, Piranha, Coraline, Avatar—most exhibitors would have taken advantage of the 3D popularity and converted to 3D screens. But, with recent stringency on finances they are simple not able to deliver. According to Variety.com though, Paramount wants to make it possible for any willing and semi-able exhibitor to convert to 3D. Here’s the deal: If the exhibitor can afford the conversion to a 3D screen, Paramount will foot the bill for virtual print fees. Currently, there are only about 1,200 3D screens in the country of the 5,000+ digital screens, but according to the report, with Paramount’s plan, 3D screens should exceed 2,000 by the March 27th release of Monsters vs. Aliens. Get your glasses ready ladies and gents. It’s going to be a 3D 2009!
