With the release of Coraline less than two weeks away, Neil Gaiman's name is showing up in the news quite a bit these days. Now the Washington Post is reporting something that will make Gaiman's name more ubiquitous than ever -- the dark fantasy scribe has just won the Newbery Medal, the highest honor in America for a writer of children's literature.

The awards were announced today at the 2009 Youth Media Awards in Denver, at the American Library Association's midwinter meeting. Gaiman won for The Graveyard Book, his recent bestselling macabre twist on Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book. Although Gaiman is a Brit, since he--unlike J.K. Rowling--lives in America, he qualified for the prestigious honor. Congrats from all of us here at FEARnet, Mr. G.
