Update: We just heard from our contact at MGM that the following casting announcement has not been confirmed, which is why the Variety link has gone dead. So think of the following as a hypothetical scenario, and, until otherwise confirmed, hopeful thinking.

Australian actor Chris Hemsworth has, according to Variety, just become the first young lead cast in Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard's highly anticipated Cabin in the Woods. Previous casting announcements included veteran actors Bradley Whitford and Richard Jenkins. But Hemsworth is the first cast member likely to induce swooning in Whedon's young fanbase.

Though his most substantial prior work was a regular role on an Aussie soap opera, Hemsworth will introduce himself to most genre fans this summer, when he plays George Kirk, Captain James T. Kirk's father, in J.J. Abrams' take on Star Trek. Getting to work with both J.J. and Joss at the start of your film career, Chris? Please, man. Don't make we want to kill you out of envy.
