UPDATE: 3/13/2009: An LA Times reporter spoke directly with Summit Entertainment's president of production, Erik Feig and confirmed that Juan Antonio Bayona has NOT been tapped for Eclipse, the third installment of the Twilight film franchise as an earlier Variety.com  report previously indicated. Rather, he says the job hasn't been offered to anyone!

"We’ve met with three or four talented filmmakers," he said. "And we’ll be meeting with three or four more other candidates before we make any decision. No one has been offered the job." Yikes! Some fact checker at Variety is in deep! Does this mean the job is still open for Drew Barrymore? Ohh boy!

UPDATE 3/12/2009: Variety.com is reporting that though Summit Entertainment has not confirmed Juan Antonio Bayona as the director of the Twilight franchise’s third film, Eclipse, they are expected to make an official announcement soon. Additionally the studio has released Eclipse’s theatrical debut date as June 30, 2010. Bayona will be the third director in the Twilight film adaptation franchise replacing Chris Weitz, director of New Moon who took over the reigns for Catherine Hardwick, director of Twilight.

News is streaming in from HollywoodReporter.com, making it  near impossible for genre fans to renounce the third installment of the Twilight film franchise! According to the report, Summit may tap Guillermo del Toro’s Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage), who has emerged as a finalist to direct the pic based on Stephenie Meyer’s third book.

Currently Bayona is signed on to direct a thriller, Hater, for Universal but with the rapid production schedule given to the Twilight film adaptations, Bayona will likely have to put that on the backburner. We all know how creepy Bayona’s Orphanage was, but what do you think, will he do the werewolf vs. vampire battles of Eclipse justice?
