UPDATE 3/15/2009: The Last House on the Left isn’t #1 at the box office and it definitely didn’t break horror movie release records (or even Wes Craven remake records—The Hills Have Eyes did $15.7 opening weekend). But being the optimists we are here at FEARnet, we figured, it’s a fine Monday morning for fans out there when the top 3 films at the box office are genre titles! In the first spot we’ve got kid-friendly genre title, Race to Witch Mountain starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson which pulled in $25 million, sadly beating out #2, Watchmen which shrunk by 67% and only pulled in $18 million. In the #3 spot, The Last House on the Left from Dennis Iliadis scored $14.6 million. The number isn’t terrible, but compared to the $50 million opening weekend of Friday the 13th and the $20 million opening weekend of My Bloody Valentine 3D--an even lesser known title than Last House,--$14.6 isn’t stellar either. Surprisingly, BoxOfficeMojo.com is reporting that 57% of the Last House audience was female. With support from that segment of the genre fan-base, it might be safe to assume that The Last House on the Left may have a bit of theatrical staying power! Make it happen lady FEARnettians!

DeadlineHollywood is reporting that The Last House on the Left took in an estimated 5.5 million on Friday for a total estimated weekend take of 15 million and the # 3 spot at the box office (just behind Watchmen and Race to Witch Mountain). Not huge numbers by any means, but if this flick has legs (and we think/hope it does…see it!) Last House could have a fairly successful run. Expect the ‘real’ box office numbers by Monday, and don’t forget to check out all of FEARnet’s The Last House on the Left coverage including Riki Lindhome's (Sadie) exclusive blog!
