As the creator of The Goon, Eric Powell is one of the best-known creators in horror comics today. Now, Dark Horse, publisher of The Goon, has recruited Powell to work on their upcoming new Creepy. Hit the jump to see what Powell will be doing on the re-launched comic-book classic.
What can you tell us about the new Creepy?
I don't know a whole lot, but I've done some character design for the expanded Creepy family. And worked on the [promotional] poster. But other than that I don't know a whole helluva lot.
Will you be doing any interiors?
At this time I'm not, for scheduling reasons. But I am gonna be doing some of the first covers.
You're in good company. The covers of the original series were nothing to sneeze at.
Oh yeah. I'm kind of scared and completely excited at the same time, at the idea of being in the next generation of artists to come along and do this. I don't want to let it down. It's Frazetta, y'know? [Laughs.] So I'm gonna have fun with it and do what I can, and hopefully I'm adding to the history and not breaking it down.
Has your own work been influenced much by the original Creepy?
Oh yeah. I'm a big Bernie Wrightson fan, so I always look for his stuff and you got his stories in there. Corben. All the stuff's incredible. And I read somewhere once that they told Bernie Wrightson, "Look, we're gonna let you do what you want to do, but it's got to be your best work ever." That's the way it should be – "We're gonna set you loose; you give us the best work you've ever done." That's the way all art should be. If someone has built up a reputation for their work, or their volume of work, that you can trust, you should be able to turn them loose. They don't need a lot of noodling. You don't need twenty people to put their fingers in it. Just say, "Okay, we trust you. Just do the best thing you've ever done." There's something really awesome about that.
