Free Comic Book Day is coming once more, and comic book fans everywhere will soon be celebrating. This year the holiday falls on May 2nd; and, as in years past, most major (and many minor) comic book publishers will offer one special comic completely free to everyone who stops by their local comic book shop. (And in these tough economic times, it's hard to beat free.) Amidst all the superhero and science-fiction titles, are a surprising number of horror-themed books. Which ones, you ask? Find out after the jump!
This year, Dark Horse is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its first Aliens vs. Predators comic with, you guessed it, a special Aliens/Predators comic. (And you know it's gotta be better than the two AvP movies.) Check out the two different covers that this "flip format" book will sport, as it features two stories – one for each alien race.
Not to be outdone, Alterna Comics is offering a copy of Attack of the Alterna-Zombies. It's in the spirit of Marvel Zombies, but with Alterna characters! As Zombies! Fighting Abraham Lincoln and Jesus!
Devil's Due is giving us Mercy Sparx: Under New Management, starring the company's popular Devil-Girl, who has been "secretly hired by Heaven to hunt down rogue angels." In this free comic, "Mercy starts the second chapter in her life on Earth as a true ‘employee' of Heaven, with new bosses and new tasks… and even more fighting and drinking!"
Remember that loveable comic-strip character Nancy? She could be pretty dull, huh? Well did you know that a comics creator named John Stanley wrote and drew the character for a little while and not only made her adventures much hipper, but created a cool character named Melvin Monster?! Drawn & Quarterly is collecting both characters' adventures in what's sure to be a great kids horror comic, with the aptly titled Nancy & Melvin Monster.
Finally, Radical will have a special anthology sampler book of its numerous titles, including Incarnate (from Nick Simmons, son of KISS's Gene Simmons); Oblivion (created by Joseph Kosinski & written by Ian Edginton), FVZA: Federal Vampire and Zombie Agency (written by David Hine), The Last Days of American Crime (by Rick Remender), Hotwire: Requiem for the Dead (by Steve Pugh & Warren Ellis), Hercules II: The Knives of Kush, Legends, Shrapnel: Aristeia Rising, Aladdin: Legacy of the Lost, and more.
So swing by your comic book shop on May 2, where you'll find free copies of all of these books – as well as Bongo's Simpsons comic, IDW's Transformers Animated/G.I. Joe, Marvel's Wolverine: Origin of an X-Man, and many, many more. For more details check out the official Free Comic Book Day website. And happy reading!
