Wondering why the hell FEARnet’s talking about Easter eggs? Well, an Easter egg (for those who’ve been living under a rock for the last twenty years) isn't just a hardboiled holiday treat...it's also the official term for all those little hidden goodies we find in horror movies and DVD menus. Ever click through a special features menu on a DVD and, all of a sudden, accidentally illuminate a hidden icon? That's an Easter egg. So to celebrate the holiday we've broken down the different types of treasures we've found in our favorite Easter eggs – broken down into easy-to-digest sections!
Behind the Scenes
Lost – We’re starting with the acclaimed J.J. Abrams-produced show because it’s the current king of Easter eggs. Every season is chock-full of them! Take, for instance, the DVD set of season 4 (which boasts a whopping 17 Easter eggs). Highlight “deleted scenes” on disc 5, then press down, then left to see a great interview with Jorge Garcia talking about his character, Hurley. Can you find the other 16 eggs?
Cloverfield – Another great entry from Mr. Abrams! Highlight a hidden icon in the “Scene Selection” menu, just above “Scene 10” to see the actors getting attacked by green x's in the subway (where hungry parasites should be!). In a movie with such huge special effects, it’s nice to see them let their guard down here!
Killer Klowns from Outer Space – Highlight the words “Play Movie” in the special features section and press up – click the hidden popcorn kernel to see "Klown Auditions", which show how the actors playing the klowns practiced their ridiculous walk and stride in this cheese-ball classic!
Dawn of the Dead – On the four-disc ultimate edition of the original Romero Dawn many eggs lay in waiting. On disc one, go to the 'Extras' submenu and click up or left to highlight a zombie. Click it to watch a five-minute interview with George's wife and production partner Chris Romero, who recounts how she and George met and fell in love! (Awww…) On the fourth disc, arrow left until you find the hidden icon (a zombie) and select it to see a Buddhist monk proclaim his love for the movie!
Bonus Scenes
House of 1000 Corpses – Do you love Otis, Baby and Captain Spaulding? Then you’ll be happy to know that in three bonus scenes we get to see them eating, chatting, dancing, and singing. (Weirdly, we do not get to see them reading Dostoevsky.) For the first clip, go to scene selection and highlight “s**t ten bricks” – press right to highlight a hidden icon. Select that to see the three do a pyramid cheer in front of a green screen! In the special features section, highlight “Tiny F’ed a Stump” and hit left. Press the hidden icon to see the three talking about Tiny and the stump f-ing. Finally, on the main menu, highlight the Lionsgate Films logo and press right to see the three dancing a hoedown!
A Nightmare on Elm Street – One of the best DVD features we’ve seen in a long time comes from the box set for Nightmare. On the final disc there’s a huge “Labyrinth” full of surprises, scares, and puzzles. It’s like having your very own interactive Elm Street adventure! If you can successfully beat the Labyrinth, you’ll be treated to an alternate ending of the original film, featuring Freddy going for a spin and Nancy’s mother meeting her maker!
Saw – We could pick from all types of Easter eggs on the Saw films. But we’ll stick with the expanded original DVD. On disc one, go to the scene selection (or “pieces of the puzzle”) menu and highlight scene 20. Press down to highlight a soap dispenser, which, once clicked, will show the entire movie in 60 seconds! Up for a good laugh? Select the “sounds” option from the main menu; highlight “Audio Commentaries” and press left twice to highlight the faucet. Press it to see the film in 60 seconds…acted out with puppets!
Above and Beyond
His Name Was Jason – Anchor Bay’s tribute to Jason Voorhees holds a few key Easter eggs in its basket. On the second disc, in the main menu, two different songs are hidden in the slashes in Jason’s mask. First, highlight “Fox Comes Home”, and press left to highlight the left slash, this will bring you to a song by Stu Charno (that’s Ted from Part 2 to you). Next, highlight “Final Cuts” on the main menu and press left to highlight the right slash; press it for a song by Ari Lehman, who played the original Jason in the first film!
Evil Dead – In the “Book of the Dead” edition of this DVD, go to the second page of DVD extras and press left until you highlight a skull. This will reveal a great panel discussion that took place after a Halloween viewing of the film. Cast and crew reunited after years apart to talk about their experiences with the film!
Alien – In the “Special Features” menu, press down until you highlight the puddle of acid blood and select it. You'll get to see Kane’s explanation of the entire life cycle of the Xenomorphs (that's aliens to you, bud).
Return of the Living Dead – In the special edition DVD of this cult classic, go to subtitle options and highlight “Off” under “Zombie Subtitle Stream”. Press the hidden red brain icon which appears and you'll be treated to a new subtitle feature entitled "Zombie Thoughts" which run throughout the movie and show you what the zombies are thinking. It's clever, classic, hilarious, and totally hidden. The perfect Easter egg!
We hope we've filled your basket with enough goodies to hold you over until the next bloody holiday. Think we’ve missed some classic Easter eggs? Found some earth shattering secrets on your favorite DVD? Let us know. Tell us about your favorite eggs and show the world you can be as obsessed with horror flicks (and all their hidden prizes) as the FEARnet crew!
