Before you begin lighting the torches and wielding your pitchforks let’s clarify that “Gore” refers not to the bloody brain matter and skull pieces you expect to splash up against the silver screen in the film adaptation of the Take-Two Interactive video game, Bioshock. Instead, “Gore” refers to director Gore Verbinski who recently gave up his Pirates of the Caribbean 4 gig for the big screen adapt of Bioshock. It was looking good for a while there for ol’ Gore but now it seems that Bioshock has too been affected by the evil force that is “the recession”. Variety reports that Universal Pictures has halted production on the film—which was in pre-production--citing that the $160 million budget simply became untenable. Sheesh, I’ll say! Though it doesn’t look promising that we’ll see Bioshock at its intended 2010 release, Verbinski isn’t giving up hope, although it may be back to Pirates 4 for him at this point.

“We were asked by Universal to move the film outside the U.S. to take advantage of a tax credit,” said Verbinski. “We are evaluating whether this is something we want to do. In the meantime, the film is in a holding pattern.”

Scripted by John Logan, Bioshock centers on the underwater city of Rapture where a pilot crash-lands near a secret entrance to a utopia with serious sinister origins. No new release date or production schedule has been released.
