Marilyn Manson Meditating Murder?

Whether a legitimate meltdown or a strange attempt to maintain his edgy alt-cred, Marilyn Manson’s increasingly weird relationship with the media following the release of his new album The High End of Low took an even crazier turn last week with his latest journal entry, in which he basically threatened to murder music journalists in retaliation for perceived slights against him. I’m not really spooked by this prospect any more than the rest of my peers, but seriously, dude… WTF?

Manson’s latest rant, in the form of a sloppily-written MySpace blog update, seemingly responds to recent allegations by the press suggesting he’s been indulging heavily in certain illicit vices (rumors he may have played a hand in promoting himself in past interviews), invites the reader to help him pay a personal visit to those who have wronged him: “[I]f one more ‘journalist’ makes a cavalier statement about me and my band,” he writes, “I will personally or with my fans help, greet them at their home and discover just how much they believe in their freedom of speech.”

As if this weren’t already an overt threat of violence against those unnamed offenders, he challenges the “soon-to-be-murdered-in-their-home press” by concluding: “I dare you all to write one more thing that you won't say to my face. Because I will make you say it. In that manner. That is a threat.”

This latest heap o’ crazy isn’t doing much to shake the theory that Manson’s been deliberately pushing a darker, more dangerous image of himself onto the public, but whether fans are going along with it is uncertain. If his goal is to get his mug in the magazines, it’s working (for now), but how much this is going to boost his career is not quite as certain. If he’s really slipping from sanity (I doubt it… he’s goofy, but not as crazy as he’d have you believe), the whole spectacle would quickly shift from amusing to just plain depressing.
