Saddle up, pardners – Jon Favreau could very well follow up next summer's hotly anticipated Iron Man 2 with Cowboys and Aliens, a big-screen adaptation of the Platinum Studios comic book. If he does tackle the project, he'll be joined by his BFF, Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr.

According to Variety, Imagine Entertainment's Brian Grazer and Ron Howard are producing the DreamWorks/Universal project with Steven Spielberg, Platinum Studios CEO Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. Production would start next summer. Kurtzman and Orci are presently rewriting the script with Lost executive producer (and their Star Trek 2 writing partner) Damon Lindelof.

The story explains what happens when an alien ship lands in the Old West. With Downey and Favreau in the saddle, will the project take on a fun, adventuresome tone? Or will this be a dark sci-fi thriller along the lines of District 9? If you're curious as to how the original comic reads, you can check out the whole thing free online right here on DrunkDuck.com.
