Dread Central
confirms that Patrick Lussier is indeed going to direct Halloween 3 in 3-D for The Weinsteins. In the article Dread Central points to a Nov. start date for shooting. But what about Drive Angry, that Nicholas Cage thriller Lussier was attached to?

Dread Central says, 'Rest assured that film is very much still happening. A trusted source close to the production of both films has told us exclusively that the two projects are extremely important to Lussier and company, and production of Drive Angry will begin immediately after Halloween 3D is completed.'

In an article that posted this weekend, Variety reports that (despite their financial woes) the Weinstein's have hired writer Ehren Kruger (The Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen) to revive the Children of the Corn franchise. The Weinstein's are quoted as saying, "We felt the New World film was a missed opportunity," said Weinstein. "If you read the short story, it's got such a strong feeling to it and there's this religious overtone to it as well. Ehren wants to hit it hard. It's popular in Hollywood to say you re-envisioning a project but a lot of the time they're just carbon copying the original. We are bringing something new to the story."

I think it's great that they want to bring something 'new to the story' but I don't think that the first step in doing that is insulting the original film.

In the same Variety piece, it's noted that the Weinstein's are also in talks with director Patrick Lussier (My Bloody Valentine 3-D) about their proposed sequel to Rob Zombie's Halloween II, Halloween 3-D which we told you about here. True to form, they intend to rush the hell out of this one and have it in theaters next summer 2010.

One can't help but wonder how much of this is just talk. Word on the streets is that the Weinstein's are in deep debt and have been letting employees go left and right. In addition to H3-D and Children of the Corn, they're also knee deep in Alex Aja's Piranha 3-D (currently in post production) and then there's all that big talk of a new Scream trilogy Kevin Williamson has been writing. One thing is for sure,  the future of the Weinstein's is fairly uncertain and there's no telling what we're going to get.
