Saw VI (as we reported earlier today), in its opening weekend, may have only grossed half of Saw V's earnings at the box office, but overall this weekend's horror-related releases made a substantial amount more than those from the same weekend last year.

For one thing, according to BoxOfficeMojo, there were more horror-related films in the top 10 this year, with Paranormal Activity (the weekend's top earner), Saw VI, the remake of The Stepfather, Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant, and Zombieland present. Last year, the top 10 for this weekend offered only Saw V and Quarantine. (Particularly heartening is the fact that among this year's five films, there's only one remake and one sequel.)

Collectively, the earnings were way up -- with this year's horror-related titles generating 53,948,000 dollars, versus the 32,635,216 taken in by last year's films at this time.

So chin up, horror fans -- your favorite genre is doing better at the boxoffice. And you've got a few more options for how to spend your Halloween this year.
