Phobia Friday: Chrometophobia or Chrematophobia - Fear of money.

Reuters did a write-up on the state of horror in video games, and came up with some very impressive numbers: $147 million in horror video game sales through September of this year versus $131 million for all of 2008.  The 2009 numbers were certainly pumped up by the March release of Capcom’s Resident Evil 5, which to date has sold 1.94 million copies worldwide.

When asked about the appeal of horror in video games, genre legend Kane Hodder, who made his mark behind the mask of Jason Voorhees, offered up this wisdom.  “Whenever horror movies do well, Hollywood always rushes more into theaters and people get a little burned out on them,” said Hodder, “But with games, there are fewer choices in the genre and they tend to be spaced out better.”

Former Freddy Krueger and Fear Clinic star Robert Englund shared a more fan-oriented sentiment, explaining “Halloween gives fans the chance to dress up in costumes and celebrate horror, but video games are the best way for fans to actually participate in these worlds.”

As if these juicy tidbits weren’t enough, the article also let slip that EA has Dead Space 2 in development “for next year.”  Dead Space 2 in 2010?  Yes please!
