After fading from view in the wake of their (sort-of) farewell tour, legendary industrial rocker Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails have surfaced again with a major update this week: thanks to an enterprising and tech-savvy group of fans, we now have a very personal document of their groundbreaking 2008 “Lights in the Sky” tour, and the results of that experiment are now being made available to everyone – totally free. Read on to learn the story behind the “gift”…
Despite being one of the most expensive and technically ambitious stage productions for the band, they were unable to secure a professional DVD release to package the many hours of HD footage they shot during the 2008 tour. Last year, Reznor and company came up with a “plan B,” in which they made all of the raw footage available for download – inviting fans to edit together their own versions.
“There were no rules,” the group announced. “No strings attached. This was a gift, and an experiment, and for the past year we've watched it come to life in more ways than we could have ever imagined.” The most ambitious attempt came from a group calling themselves “This One Is On Us,” who collected their footage into a monolithic production entitled Another Version of the Truth: The Gift. The group worked for a full year compiling the documentary, and now the end result is available in just about every format imaginable – from Blu-Ray on the high end, to iPod and YouTube for the more casual viewer. There’s even talk of theatrical screenings in the near future.
The band considers this a great honor to see fans following in their footsteps to pioneer new user-driven media distribution. “This is yet another example of a devoted fanbase and a policy of openness combining to fill in blanks left by old media barriers,” they declared. “The entire NIN camp is absolutely thrilled that treating our fans with respect and nurturing their creativity has led to such an overwhelming outpour of incredible content, and that we now have such a high quality souvenir from our most ambitious tour ever.” Reznor himself was more to the point, concluding: “Nine Inch Nails fans kick ass.”
