Longtime FEARnet readers know that, as FEARnet began in Philadelphia, we've long held a fascination for horror pioneer Edgar Allan Poe, who penned many of his famous stories and lived for a time in the City of Brotherly Love. We've also been intrigued by the "Poe Toaster", a mysterious, scarved gentlemen who visits the author's gravesite in Baltimore (where Poe died) every year on his birthday -- today, January 19th -- to leave a glass of cognac and roses. We're not the only ones hooked on this phenomenon, howevever, as a gaggle of Poeheads flock to the site each year to pay their respects and to catch a glimpse of the mystery man. But this year, for the first time since 1949, these fine folks went home disappointed.
ABC News (along with many other outlets) is reporting that the Poe Toaster did not appear today in the early morning hours, when he typically visits the gravesite. This, of course, is troubling news. Not only to Poe fans and pilgrims but to anyone who values such things as mystery and the unknown in a world whose secrets are all too often discovered, revealed and explained away. Here's hoping the toasts continue, in one form or another, next year.
