Starting Monday, February 1, Fearnet is staging its own Sweet Sixteen. No, we're not chronicling the scariest moments in sports, as good an idea as that is; rather, we're taking a long look at the legacy of lycanthropy, and staging a showdown of the world's fiercest werewolves. Featuring vulpine warriors new and old from film and television alike, we picked 16 of the most memorable shape-shifters in entertainment history and pitted them against one another. Now it's up to you to help us pick a winner.
Next Monday, we start with the American and International brackets, in which the first few werewolves fight against one another in mortal combat. Among the competitors are Eddie Quist, the homicidal antagonist of The Howling, Dog Soldiers' Captain Richard Ryan, "the Beast" from Brotherhood of the Wolf, David Kessler of An American Werewolf in Lodon, and of course, Larry Talbot of the original The Wolf Man. You'll have two days to decide who wins; in other words, vote early and often for your favorites.
On Wednesday, the same day we announce the winners of the first vote, we start accepting votes for competitors in the second two brackets, populated by She-Wolves and Teen Wolves.
On Friday that face-off comes to an end, and we start our Elite Eight - or "ate," as the case may be. February 8 sees the field narrowed the field to the Final Four. By then, who knows who among our hirsute heroes will remain?
Who knows what will happen? Imagine the dance floor moves of Scott Howard of Teen Wolf squaring off against the middle finger of Joanie from Cursed, or Eddie Munster taking on Gretchen Krupp, the comely, cruel mistress in charge of the Werewolf Women of the S.S. Or David Kessler's youthful enthusiasm staring down Will Randall's seasoned ferocity. The possibilities aren't quite limitless, but with such an eclectic and interesting roster of ravenous competitors, this could be anyone's contest. Even Larry Talbot's pedigree as the first iconic screen wolf may not save him, especially if Twilight fans intervene on behalf of Jacob's hirsute heroism.
The field of sixteen will be down to the final matchup by Wednesday, February 10. You'll have two more days to weigh in before we crown our champion on Friday, February 12.
Not coincidentally, Feb. 12 is the same day as the release of Joe Johnston's remake of The Wolf Man, whose own protagonist seems sure to join the ranks of favorite, furry gladiators, even if he's still too green to get in on the action in our Tournament. Chime in with your choices as the competition progresses, or if your winning wolf gets knocked out, remember that you can help another wolf man (or woman) with votes in later rounds. But get involved! Click on your choices, show some love for your favorite lycanthrope, and then sit back and watch the fur fly.
