Suspiria

Must...catch...my...breath. There is an INCREDIBLE retrospective piece on Dario Argento's Suspiria in this month's American Cinematographer. It's a great read in which they discuss filming with Argento's Suspiria cinematographer Luciano Tovoli. The entire 9-page article is available online and it truly provides a priceless look into the filming of one of the most unique horror films ever made. But that's not the best part. Buried deep within the article Tovoli mentions that he's just supervised a brand new HD transfer of Suspiria for Blu-ray. Hit the jump for full details.

In Dario Argento's Suspiria an American ballet student discovers that the staff of her ballet school in Germany  is actually a coven of witches.  Suspiria is primarily known for its haunting Goblin soundtrack and the fact that it was printed using the 3-strip Technicolor process which provided the film a very rich 'fairy tale' like color palette.

From the American Cinematographer article:
Tovoli recently revisited Suspiria at Technicolor Rome to supervise a new HD transfer, which will result in a Blu-ray release this spring, he says 'I worked with a very talented colorist, Fabrizio Conti, and we tried to stay as close as possible to the look of the original. I think we did an extremely good job, but it is impossible to compare even the best digital master to a film printed with Technicolor's dye-transfer process, especially for a film as extreme as Suspiria.

So there you have it. There is an Italian import Bly-ray  floating around but I haven't heard great things about the transfer. No word on whether or not Suspiria will see a  Blu-ray release in the states, but it doesn't really matter in the end. New HD transfer of Suspiria supervised by cinematographer Luciano Tovoli? We'll all buy region-free players if we have to! If anyone has more info on this release, please comment below.
