Horror fans waited with bated breath today to find out if writer-producer Akiva Goldsman would be helming Paranormal Activity 2. Goldsman may be a great guy to have a beer with, but he's been associated with some of the worst, most overblown high-profile Hollywood genre product in recent years (and yes, in Goldsman's case, it's been product, not art). Would the man (pictured above with Paul Bettany) partly responsible for such travesties as Batman and Robin, The Da Vinci Code and I Am Legend sign on to direct the sequel to last year's fan-favorite horror indie? Hit the jump to find out.
Shock Till You Drop got things started this morning when the site featured an article in which it said sources told them Goldsman "is the one closest to sitting in the director's chair." A collective gasp could be heard emanating from horror geeks everywhere, whose dreams of Brad Anderson or Brian De Palma getting the gig were dashed.
Fortunately, Deadline was there this afternoon to prevent nerd-dom from needing life support. Goldsman will executive produce, the site reported, and "is helping to flesh out the sequel story with the producing team of Oren Peli, Jason Blum and Steven Schneider. The directing job will be filled soon as the film moves toward a May production start."
Yes, it's bad that the man who routinely throws down with the terminally too-happy Ron Howard and Will Smith will still have a say in how things work in our scrappy, scruffy little world. But I think we can all breathe a little easier than we could several hours ago.
Now I'm going back to playing that new online Nightmare on Elm Street "Keep Her Awake" game...
