30 Days of Night Dark Days

Steve Niles doesn't follow the sparkling vampire trend.  And for that fact horror fans should be grateful.  30 Days of Night was one of the better translations of a comic to screen adaptation of a horror graphic novel in some time.

Enter Ben Ketai who brings back the vampires along with Niles in the soon to be released 30 Days of Night: Dark Days, coming to DVD and Blu Ray in October from Ghost House Pictures.  Ketai directed and co-wrote the script with Niles which follows closely to the second series of comics in the 30 Days series.

IGN hosted the premiere of the films' trailer and a first showing of a clip of the film at Comic-Con along with a cast/crew Q/A panel. Dark Days finds Stella some time after the tragedy of Barrow's vampire attacks.  She finds other survivors who are also looking for revenge and they join forces in the battle against the undead.

Although the film has a smaller budget than the first it doesn't appear to suffer for it.  The vampires look just as shark like and demonic as before.  The film captures the vibe of the comics just as the first did with the clip giving off a very Aliens vibe in terms of claustrophobic terror and action.

Kiele Sanchez takes over the role of Stella, having originally auditioned for the first film and nearly getting the role.  She joins Diora Baird, Harold Perrineau and Rhys Coiro in the lead roles of the vampire fighters.

Ketai had sharpened his fangs as it were with FEARnet with the online series 30 Days of Night: Blood Trails.  He knows vampires and according to Ketai the extras and the actors who play the vampires know a lot about how to be scary.  When choosing extras for vampires he had a hundred wanna be vamps line up in a parking lot with one job, scare him.  Some of them were better at it than others, with one actually grabbing him.  She got the part.

One of the most difficult parts of the process for Niles on the project was watching parts of the film and his script being cut.  It’s difficult for a writer to see and even more so when a segment has been given life on film.

Ghost House is releasing 30 Days of Night: Dark Days thisOctober just in time for Halloween.  The premiere of the entire movie will take place at Fantastic Fest later this year.

Dark Days lives up to its predecessor from what we've seen, and it lives up to its title.  Niles likes his vampires scary and dark, and so do we.
