FEARnet Zombie Week presented by THE WALKING DEAD

#17: Clown zombie

zombie top 20

First Appearance: Zombieland, 2009. Our hero, Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), has a lifelong fear of clowns. So wouldn't it just figure that when it comes time to man up and impress Wichita (Emma Stone), he must square off with a green mucus-spewing funny man at Pacific Playland?

Bio: We don't know a whole lot about this guy aside from the fact that, in a former life, he probably used to entertain kids at the amusement park. Although we never saw him in living form, it's hard to imagine this guy was the most amicable of entertainers even before he went undead. He just looks a little rough around the edges. His second death isn't in vein, however, as Witchita finally sees the heroic side of Columbus. And hey, a mallet to the head is messy but quick.

Diet: The little kids this guy used to make laugh now make up his singular food group. Considering his eat first, ask questions later approach, we're betting he had a few pint-sized kid snacks before he met his match with careful Columbus.

Awesome Because: Clowns are already creepy and eating human flesh makes them even worse. Even in death, however, this Zombie Clown has the last laugh when his nose horn offers a final "honk!" as his skull is crushed to bits.

16. Zombie Sheep

First Appearance: Black Sheep, 2007. First in regular sheep form and later, after they've infected some humans by their bite, as killer man-sheep.

Bio: The products of genetic mutation experiments gone wrong, these sheep transform from peaceful, slow-moving vegetarians to vicious carnivores, racing to attack fleeing humans. Worse of all, if they take a chomp without finishing the meal, the result is a painful transformation into a two-legged man/sheep beast. Black Sheep may purport to be a comedy, but the Zombie Sheep are a terrifying twist on these traditionally docile creatures.

Diet: These walking sweaters have had enough of the human's ungratefulness and payback's a bitch. Turns out, we taste just as good to them as they taste to us.

Awesome Because: Major points for creativity on this one. This New Zealand flick takes a creature we couldn't possibly fear and turns him into a horrifying monster. I mean, we've seen killer clowns, killer Kris Kringles and even a killer snowman, but sheep? Try counting these guys to help you sleep.

15. Zombie Hare Krishna

First Appearance: Dawn of the Dead, 1978. Proof of the staying power of Romero's undead creations, Hare Krishna Zombie isn't a focal character, but his unlikely inclusion has made him a fan favorite.

Bio: George Romero's zombies have always come from just about every walk of life, so why not a Hare Krishna? After all, they do hang out in malls and airports, so they're every bit as susceptible to the infestation, regardless of their enlightenment. While Romero would later introduce learning zombies like Bub, Hare Krishna Zombie appears pretty much like all the other zombies in Dawn, brainlessly lumbering through the mall looking for live food. We don't get to see a whole lot of Hare Krishna Zombie, but he tends to stand out with his orange robe, blue skin and shining bald head.

Diet: Aside from retaining the look, Hare Krishna zombie appears to have lost his ways. In life he avoided intoxicants, stimulants and meat. In living death, his appetite has overwhelmed his religious convictions.

Awesome Because: Romero is at it again with his social commentary, this time portraying a peace-loving Hare Krishna as a flesh-craving zombie. Whether it's meant to be subversive or just to make the point that no one in Romero's post-apocalyptic world is immune, we applaud the effort.

Check back tomorrow for the next three zombies in our countdown, including one who throws a mighty shield. More updates daily until we reveal our number 1 this Sunday!
