Day three of our zombie countdown is here, and we have three very worthy brain munchers for your perusal. Feeling a little lost? Check out zombies 15, 16, and 17.
14. Big Daddy
First Appearance: 2005's Land of the Dead, directed by George Romero.
Bio: A hulking hillbilly of a man, Big Daddy was a gas station attendant in his human life. As a zombie, he has somehow managed to remain aware, even intelligent. This makes Big Daddy the de facto zombie leader as the undead break into the humans' fortress, eager to dine on rich people's brains. He is the first to break the spell that fireworks have, up to this point, held over zombies. He figures out that, though zombies can't swim, they can walk on the river floor and come out the other side. He even remembers that gasoline and fire are a bad combination, and uses it to kill the human leader.
Diet: Big Daddy is too busy playing political extremist to eat. But he does enjoy standard human flesh.
Awesome Because: He probably wasn't a smart man as a human, but as a zombie, he is their king. His intelligence is never explained, but it doesn't really matter. You are rooting for him.
13. Zombie Spider-Man and Zombie Captain America
First Appearance: Marvel Zombies, 2005-2006.
Bio: We usually think of zombies as everyday nobodies, walking the streets groaning in hunger, brainless and unfocused. Not so in Marvel Zombies, where the infected retain many of their former attributes, including personality, thoughts and superhuman abilities, albeit saddled with that insatiable taste for man meat. Captain America is still big and buff, shrieking with anger as he pounds human flesh to the perfect tenderness for consumption. Cap eventually spreads his infections to a few friends, including Spider-man. Once possessed, the web crawler is wracked with guilt at the cannibalistic atrocities he's committed, such as snacking on dear Aunt May and having sweet, sweet Mary Jane for dessert. Sad face followed by a satisfying "Buuuurp!"
Diet: Aside from the aforementioned members of Peter Parker's family, the zombified heroes also consume the ultimate meal, Galactus.
Awesome Because: What's more awesome than super-powered zombies? Besides throwing in the standard zombie traits, writer Robert Kirkman (Walking Dead) went a unique direction by having his super zombies retain much of their old selves and abilities, a la Romero's Bub from Day of the Dead.
12. Dr. Hill
First Appearance: 1985's Re-Animator, directed by Stuart Gordon. Based on the H.P. Lovecraft story "Herbert West - Re-Animator"
Bio: Dr. Hill is decapitated and then reanimated by his colleague and mad scientist Herbert West, after an argument about who came up with the "brain death" theory. Naturally, his new zombie state does not please Hill, and he becomes obsessed with zombie revenge. Luckily for Hill, he can still command his body to do his bidding. Dr. Hill's shining moment, by far, is when his disembodied head gives head to a coed.
Diet: Lady parts.
Awesome Because: In a movie literally overflowing with gore and goo, Dr. Hill's character is still infamous for the oral sex scene.
Tomorrow's undead roundup includes a little zombie, a gooey zombie, and something even more evil than a zombie.
