This week in sunny Santa Monica, the annual American Film Market is underway. Thousands of producers, writers, directors, distributors, and financiers descend on the city to help decide which new and upcoming films will get distribution.
We hit the event today, and we've rounded up some of the films we're most looking forward to seeing more of. Check 'em out after the jump.
Fan-Favorite Faces
The Caller, directed by Matthew Parkhill
Bloodsucking worlds collide in a decidedly non-vampiric way. Rachelle Lafevre (Twilight) and Stephen Moyer (True Blood) star in this supernatural thriller about a woman who receives calls from a dead woman. Now she must figure out how to kill someone who is already dead.
TBK: The Toolbox Murders 2, directed by Dean Jones
The sequel a bazillion years in the making, with an all-star genre cast: Lance Henriksen (Millennium), Brian Krause (Sleepwalkers), Jeffrey Combs (Re-Animator), Tony Todd (Candyman), and Red West (I Still Know What You Did Last Summer).
Official synopsis: Picking up directly after the events of Tobe Hooper's 2003 version of The Toolbox Murders, survivors Nell and Stephen continue their night of Hell as they're rushed to the nearby Hollywood Memorial hospital. Meanwhile, detectives Cole and Barnes and criminal profiler McGavin exhume TBK's modern day tomb and uncover his origins.
Veteran Horror Helmers
11-11-11, directed by Darren Lynn Bousman
The Saw veteran's new film (the teaser poster for which can be seen above) is about a gateway between worlds that will open on November 11th, 2011, and allow creatures from that dark world into ours. Any guesses on when we can expect to see it in theatres?
Tom Holland's Twisted Tales, directed by Tom Holland
Genre vet Tom Holland, writer/director of such classics as Child's Play, Fright Night and Thinner presents an anthology piece of ten different shorts. A.J. Bowen (House of the Devil), Danielle Harris (Halloween), and William Forsythe (The Devil's Rejects) are among the stars.
3D Ain't Dead Yet
Apartment 1303 directed by Daniel Fridell
An American remake of a Japanese ghost story, Apartment 1303 revolves around a rental unit that has the distinction of driving young women to suicide. Fridell was a co-producer on the original film, and Rebecca De Mornay is rumored to be in talks for the project. Looks like the plan is for Apartment 1303 to shoot in 3D.
Spiders 3D, directed by Tibor Takacs
Giant, mutant, radioactive spiders terrorizing New York City. In 3D. What could be better?
Shadowland, directed by Erik Canuel
Based on the classic novel by Peter Straub, this thriller is also to be shot in 3D. Official synopsis: The story is a timeless Faustian tale about a young university student who is lured by a charismatic old gentleman into the seductive world of magic, but is forced to decide whether or not to join the forces of evil to save the life of his best friend.
The Real Ghostbusters
8213: Gacy House, directed by Anthony Fankhauser
I'm starting to get a little tired of these "found footage" films, but I like the serial killer twist. A group of "paranormal investigators" spend the night night in the house that now occupies the lot where John Wayne Gacy's house once stood (it was demolished). Of course, the group is found dead the next day, and this is their footage.
Episode 50, directed by The Smalleys
Official synopsis: Episode 50 focuses on two television crews of paranormal experts: one team of skeptics looking to de-bunk myths about ghosts and another consisting of believers looking to prove their existence. Teaming up for the first time for a special episode, the crews get more then they bargained for when they actually make contact with a spirit of tremendous power and must ban together to stop it before it destroys them all.
Wild Cards
Of Flesh and Blood, directed by Marcus Warren
Cannibals have gone high-society in this gritty film that has been described as Gosford Park meets Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
287th Hour, directed by Jeremy Isbell
The teaser looks a little... well, pointless. Some sorta-kinda scary imagery with an ominous score does not a story make. However, the synopsis sounds intriguing: A group of students conduct an experiment to see who can stay awake for twelve straight days. Who will surive the 288th Hour?
