Horror Haunts the Oscars

It was business as usual for the most part at last night's Oscars ceremony, with genre films once again overlooked in all but the technical categories. But horror did score one key victory last night -- Black Swan star Natalie Portman became, by my reckoning, the second woman in history to win the Academy Award for Best Actress for her work in a fright film. (The first was Jodie Foster in The Silence of the Lambs.) More after the jump.

The genre's other win came when Rick Baker -- a past honoree for, fittingly enough, An American Werewolf in London -- netted the Makeup Award for his work on The Wolfman. (Be sure to check out our exclusive video interview with Rick Baker.)

In other genre-related Oscar news, the late Corey Haim and Tura Satana were omitted from the annual tribute list of the deceased. Yes, I'll admit that The Lost Boys and Faster Pussycat Kill Kill aren't exactly movie masterpieces. But their influence is felt far more than that of most Oscar winning films.
