LA-based horror band Creature Feature, the insanely entertaining creation of multi-talented Curtis RX, has been a FEARnet fave since their debut album The Greatest Show Unearthed. Now Curtis has spun off a sinister side project named Rufus Rex, and he's just about ready to unleash this musical monster upon the world in the form of the full-length album Dead Beat. He's releasing the first single from that record on Tuesday, but offered FEARnet fans the chance to hear the song one day early. Hit the jump and listen to an exclusive preview of "Rise Lazarus Rise!"

Curtis told FEARnet how his new project had many origins: "Every time I would write a song for Creature Feature or compose something for a horror project that didn't end up fitting quite right, then I would put it aside for a possible Rufus Rex song," he explained. But the songs that make up Dead Beat aren't just a random collection of oddities... there's a cool concept that ties it all together. "The story behind Rufus Rex and Dead Beat came from a comic book I had been writing," he continued, "about an adventurer who unearths the key to immortality and reanimating the dead, only to watch the world end and become the last man on earth."

Curtis also explained why the new material is a musical departure: "I recorded quite a few strange guitar-heavy demos that didn't quite fit with any of my other projects," he said. Those demos explored stories of "madness, reanimation, burying secrets in the cellar, creatures that only exist in the worlds in-between, the human body turning against itself, and the end of the world." The end result is what Curtis calls "a pseudo concept rock album," on which he wrote, recorded, and played every instrument (except drums, handled by Victor from Creature Feature). Based on this first track, it sounds like we're in for a wild ride... take a listen.
