Matt Reeves (Cloverfield, Let Me In) has signed to direct This Dark Endeavor, based on the as-yet-unpublished novel This Dark Endeavor: The Apprenticeship of Victor Frankenstein by Kenneth Oppel (the first in a series), it is expected to hit bookstores this summer. This joins Reeves's already full directorial plate, as he is also attached to aliens-run-the-world project 8 o'Clock in the Morning and vampire project The Passage. More after the jump.

This Dark Endeavor seems to have nothing to do with the creature that made Frankenstein famous. Instead, it follows Victor as he searches for the elusive ingredients to make a magical health potion in hopes of curing his ailing twin brother, Konrad.

Reeves's vision of Frankenstein will join a slew of other frankenprojects. Guillermo del Toro (who has often said it would be his dream to make a Frank film) is working with Universal on a remake of their original. Columbia Pictures is reportedly working on an "updated" retelling of the tale; Sam Raimi's Ghost House Pictures is doing a version focused on a young Victor and his obsession with corpses; and Slash's Slasher Films is working on an adaptation of Wake the Dead, a graphic novel by Steve Niles.

Suck it, zombies. Frank is the new monster on the block.
