Axe-master Tom Morello, best known as the lead guitarist for Rage Against The Machine, has joined the ever-growing number of musicians crossing over into the world of horror comics. As we revealed during Comic-Con last weekend, Morello is launching his upcoming dark fantasy series Orchid, one of three new horror titles from Dark Horse Comics. Known for his strong political views, Morello will no doubt be making some powerful social statements in the comic, but within the setting of a terrifying future world filled with strange creatures. Orchid is the story of a teenage prostitute struggling to survive in a near-future dystopia, where rising seas have drowned most of civilization and the wealthy live in heavily fortified cities, while the enslaved poor struggle to survive in a monster-filled wasteland. According to Morello, the young heroine's quest begins when she discovers "she is more than the role society has imposed upon her," and she stages a rebellion against the powers-that-be.

"I wanted to craft a story that has the same visceral impact and political clout as the music I've been involved in," Morello explained, describing the 12-issue series as a cross between The Lord of the Rings and the classic 1966 war film Battle Of Algiers. The artwork was created by Scott Hepburn (Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic), and the cover (shown above) was designed by Shepard Fairey, best known for his pop-art portrait of President Obama. Morello has also recorded a soundtrack for the series in the form of twelve original songs, with a new track distributed free with each new issue.

Orchid is set for release on October 12th through Dark Horse. For more preview images, check out the teaser they premiered at Comic-Con...
