Halloween comes earlier and earlier every year - and that's just fine by me. This year, Universal Studios is feeling the "Halloween Creep" - their renown Halloween Horror Nights is starting September 23rd, more than six weeks before Halloween. This popular event is like walking through a real horror movie - and we got an exclusive preview at what to expect.
One of the biggest attractions this year is "Alice Cooper: Welcome to My Nightmare." While most of Universal's haunted mazes are based on movies (which, this year, include Hostel, House of 1,000 Corpses, and The Thing), this is the first one inspired by music. Based largely on Cooper's 1975 concept album, Welcome to my Nightmare, the maze includes hand-picked samples from many of Cooper's albums.
Show producer John Murdy has a particular affinity for this maze, having been a devoted Alice Cooper fan since age six. "I wanted to turn Alice into a horror movie. He's my hero," Murdy admits. "We took his songs, characters he has created, and elements from his live shows, and essentially turn them into a horror movie."
That "movie" takes the guests through the nightmares of Steven, the young child from the album. As you journey through the maze, Steven grows up, and his nightmares drive him to murder and insanity. "We always put crazy details in our sets. We try to look at it from a fan's perspective," says ultimate-fan, Murdy. Among those crazy details include childhood photos of Alice; toys and dolls with "Alice Cooper-style" eyes drawn on; props and decor from Murdy's own collection; and lyrics from Alice's songs scrawled on the "asylum" walls.
Murdy took us on a special, lights-on tour through the maze. Here are some of the coolest things we saw...
