Madonna?s Maverick Red Productions and Angel Baby Entertainment hope to launch (this summer) what they are ?claiming? to be the ?New Horror Icon? Joshua Bauer in the upcoming horror flick, Digger. The film centers on a grave- digger who seeks revenge because of his harsh childhood. Ummm, one question pops to mind here, Madonna knows horror?

According to hollywoodreporter.com, Madonna and Guy Oseary's Maverick Red production genre label and Angel Baby Entertainment are producing Digger, a grave-digging horror film directed by Angel Baby partner John A. Gallagher.

The feature, set for a late-summer production in Connecticut, is the second co-production between the new Maverick Films genre arm and Angel Baby. The first, Slamdance horror screenplay competition winner Slaughter, from writers Nathan Brookes and Bobby Darby, begins production in July.

Digger follows Joshua Bauer, a man forced to dig graves by hand as a youth who seeks revenge through a brutal killing spree. The producers hope to launch Bauer as a new horror icon.

Angel Baby's Gregory Segal and Gallagher will serve as producers with Maverick Films' Oseary, Mark Morgan and Eric Thompson. Cheri Wozniak, who brought the project into the new horror label, will executive produce. The screenplay is written by Stephen Lancellotti.

Gallagher's directing credits include Blue Moon, starring Ben Gazzara, which won a best feature award at the Avignon/New York Film Festival, and The Deli, starring Gretchen Mol and Chris Noth. Angel Baby, his company with Segal, has produced six features.

Maverick has several thrillers in development, including The Stepfather for Sony Pictures/Screen Gems, a remake of the Asian horror film The Phone and the serial killer film Labyrinth.
