From Variety
Todd McFarlane, creator of Spawn, and Josh Olson (A History of Violence) are in efforts to work with characters from L. Frank Baum?s Oz series, off of which The Wizard of Oz originated. McFarlane will produce while Olson will write the new film. They stated that they want the film to be more of a sequel than a remake.
Apparently the two cannot agree on the tone of the film. McFarlane wants a hard PG-13, while Olson is thinking more along the lines of PG. McFarlane has a darker vision for the Oz series, as seen in his dark re-imagined action figures. The picture shown below (from Spawn.comSpawn.com) is his depiction of Dorothy?not quite the way you remember her, right? Olson commented on the difference of views, stating:
"The appealing thing about the Baum books to me is how wildly imaginative they are. There are crazy characters from amazing places. I want this to be ?Harry Potter? dark, not ?Seven? dark."
Well, whichever direction they take this, let?s hope they don?t get any inspiration from the official sequel, Return to Oz.
