The name 'Verity Lambert' may not be instantly recognizable to most horror fans, but rest assured that, directly or indirectly, she was responsible for unleashing more monsters upon the earth than most any creator one can name. Lambert was the founding producer of Doctor Who, the longest-running English-language genre television show in history. The youngest, and indeed only, female drama producer at the BBC when the show launched in 1963, she oversaw the time-and-space-traveling Doctor's early adventures (in which the character was first played by William Hartnell), and oversaw the first alien menances he battled--including those perennial fan favorites, the Daleks. Variety reported today that Ms. Lambert has passed away at the age of 71. We at FEARnet express our condolences to her family and friends. And we take a kind of comfort in knowing the champion she birthed--arguably the most successful in British pop culture since Sherlock Holmes--will continue to roam time and space (as played by David Tennant) when the series contines on December 25th with its 2007 Christmas Special.
