DC/Vertigo continues its reprinting of Alan Moore's run on Saga of the Swamp Thing, with this, the series' fifth volume. Though it perhaps doesn't reach the heights of the "American Gothic" storyline that preceded it, you won't hear any complaints from me. Collecting issues 51 through 56, Volume 5 finds the muck monster tangling with DC Universe stalwarts Batman and Lex Luthor, and fearlessly confronts real-world prejudice by having Swampie's girlfriend Abby under fire for having relations with a giant plant. Rich Veitch and Alfredo Alcala handle most of the art chores; they might not be as meticulous as the previous team of Steve Bissette and John Totleben, but their storytelling is no less rambunctious (as was made clear when Veitch was hired to succeed Moore as writer starting with issue 65).
