Tim Sullivan's one of the nicest horror movie directors I've met. He's so nice, in fact, that it's difficult, upon meeting Sullivan, to believe he's responsible for the madness of 2001 Maniacs and its upcoming sequel Beverly Hellbillys. Fortunately for horror-comedy fans, Sullivan knows how to tap into his own inner maniac. We spoke with the director at last night's Reaper Award Ceremony here in Los Angeles, where he was joined by the cast of his twisted saga…
So how are you feeling now that this thing is done?
We're very excited. We locked picture. It was one of those things where we were trying to get this movie made for so long and then finally it was like, "Hurry up and make it." So we worked really hard, we worked around the clock. Kathryn Le is one of our new maniacs, and Ryan Fleming is coming back. So it's kind of cool to be back. Something old, something new, something borrowed, something… not blue – it's very red. [Laughs.] It's bloody, it's sexy, it's funny. I mean, the thing that's really cool… It's so fun to see Zombieland being a big success, because that kind of horror comedy is exactly what this is.
It's right up your alley, eh?
I always hate people saying you can't mix horror and comedy. You can – you totally can. …. James Whale did it right in Frankenstein! So we're really having fun with that. And we locked picture. We're going to be selling it to distributors in about a month and then… I don't know, probably have a big premiere in December
Can you say if this chapter ends with any sort of cliffhanger?
Well, let's just say, don't leave during the end credits. We have a big surprise at the end credits – that will definitely answer that question.
