Foodies beware! Joe Maggio’s Bitter Feast premieres at the Los Angeles Film Festival this week and you’re likely to rethink trash talking another restaurant on Yelp after seeing this one. In Bitter Feast, the host of a local TV food show kidnaps the critic that ruined his career only to put him through a series of torturous food challenges like cooking the perfect egg and a steak medium rare.
We recently spoke with Joe Maggio and Larry Fessenden about Bitter Feast and we also asked Maggio about his story for the recently announced radio program Tales From Beyond the Pale (see our initial report here) in which they tackle old school audio theater, inspired by radio shows from the likes of Boris Karloff, Alfred Hitchcock and more. These are audio only presentations that focus on story and sound. Producer Larry Fessenden also offered updates on Tales From Beyond the Pale and a few of Glass Eye Pix upcoming flicks like Ti West’s The Innkeepers and Stake Land. Hit the jump to see what they had to say.

First we spoke to Bitter Feast director Joe Maggio about his entry for the old school radio programTales From Beyond the Pale, he told us, ‘[My story] is called Man on the Ledge and it's about a guy who is sitting on the ledge of a building ten floors up and the cop who tries to talk him down. It's a series of reveals, once you think you know what the situation is we do a little flip and the cop [in the story] is [the character] Bill Coley from Bitter Feast'.
Larry Fessenden adds, ‘There's my own [story] which is called The Hole Digger and Paul Solet (Grace) has turned in a script that is incredibly deviant about a surgeon and a woman who keeps wanting to have work done on her whole body. JT Petty (Soft for Digging, The Burrowers) has put one together about a couple that has a newborn and they start hearing things through the baby monitor that gives them the creeps. Ashley Thorpe (The Hairy Hands, Scayrecrow) has an amazing Hammer-esque story that takes place on The Moore so it's a period piece with horses (laughs). Glenn McQuaid’s (I Sell the Dead) got one about an old fishing trawler and the most unusual fish that they pull up (laughs) so they really range from modern to that retro feeling. We want it to be modern and extremely engrossing in stereo sound'.
Producer Larry Fessenden on The Innkeepers:
'He's (Ti West) editing, Ti is very serious about his process so he's sweating away (laughs) but it was a great shoot. Even Ti who tends to be anxious about things couldn't help but admitting that it was a really good time and Sara Paxton is outstanding as the lead and Kelly McGillis who we worked with on Stake Land is in it. We filmed it in a real haunted hotel so we had help from the spirits. We shot it in 35mm which is a tribute to Ti. Our approach is to see what the director wants and let's try to make that happen. Nowadays wanting to shoot film is an eccentric request at this budget but we made it happen and we're very proud of that
It's not a period piece like House of the Devil. It's not just a lone character, Pat Healey plays the other innkeeper and they're both trying to hold down this last weekend in this huge hotel. I think there's gonna be a surprising amount of comedy and lightness to it. This is Ti West's scheme that this will therefore make the thrills a little more disturbing because it will start out in such a comfortable pleasant space and when it starts to go wrong you'll really feel it. I think that's the strategy that Ti enjoys. I know I've enjoyed it'.
Producer Larry Fessenden on Stake Land:
'We're almost mixing and I'm very excited about it. It's a different kind of animal from the Ti West film. It's epic in scope. We filmed it over 3 different seasons so it just goes from wintry landscapes to the fall and spring. It's a really cool ensemble movie and I look forward to people experiencing it. It's like a western'.
