Most Frankenstein fans would agree that artist Bernie Wrightson's take on Mary Shelley's classic is the definitive illustrated version of the book. That's why it's pretty exciting to learn today that Wrightson is revisiting the monster in an upcoming comic book series penned by Steve Niles, entitled Frankenstein Alive, Alive -- the first $3.99 full-color, 32-page issue of which is due out in 2012 from IDW. I caught up with Niles earlier today at Comic-Con, and he told me a little bit about his plans for his reteaming with Wrightson, as well as some of his other projects. Find out what he had to say after the jump.
Can you give us an update on what you are working on right now?
We're doing the Sparkles for Blood Drive here, where people can go to the IDW booth and turn in their Twilight books and get 30 Days of Night graphic novels. We're doing a new ongoing monthly 30 Days of Night. I'm doing the first four issues with Sam Kieth. I'm doing a 13-issue Frankenstein sequel with Bernie Wrightson for IDW. Still doing Criminal Macabre, and trying to get the Wake the Dead movie going, and still juggling a million things at once.
The biggest thing here at the show is Tr!ckster, going on across the street. Scott Morse got this thing going, and it's a whole store dedicated to creator owned [work]. That's where I'm spending most of my time actually.
Can you talk about the Frankenstein project? Wrightson's long been obsessed with Frankenstein. Is this new book based on any of his art that wasn't used in his original Frankenstein illustrated book?
No, this is literally… And Bernie's actually being a real stickler, that he doesn't want to reveal a lot of what we are doing... But it picks up right where Shelley's novel ends. It's a 13-issue odyssey about what happens to him decades after the first book.
