Nothing fills me up with the Halloween spirit like plunging a butcher knife deep into the pulp of a nice plump pumpkin. Artfully, I slice away with feigned Michael Myers-like precision, but alas, my attempts at portraying the grim image from my mind to the orange canvas in front of me usually fall woefully short.

The same, however, cannot be said for master of the pumpkin patch Ray Villafane.

His Predator carving still gives me the creeps. Imagine bumping into this on a dark Halloween night!

With realism like this, is it any wonder why Ray took home the 2010 Grand Prize from Food Network’s Pumpkin Challenge II?

Ray’s number one tip: "Pick a good, thick-walled pumpkin.”

What Halloween list would be complete without a great zombie entry?  Ray hits the nail on the decomposing head with this one:

This next carving by Ray is absolutely amazing… although I find myself saying that about each new carving I see from him. At first glance I thought this was also a zombie carving; however, this piece of fruit sculpture (yes a pumpkin is a fruit) is a bit more detailed: it tells the story of a decomposing man who hanged himself. Completely morbid, yet completely amazing when you think that this is made from a pumpkin!

My final two picks from Ray’s portfolio are this intense 3D skull...

...and this fantastically creepy evil pumpkin with the sewn lips:

I always love perusing photo albums of pumpkin carving contests. However, no one has grabbed my attention quite like the amazing sculptor Ray Villafane. Check out more of his work at his official site.
