With the fourth season of The Walking Dead just around the corner, AMC announced today they are entering the first stages of development on a companion series, set in the same world established in the comics by Robert Kirkman. Walking Dead producers Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd and David Alpert have all signed on for the still untitled spin-off, which AMC plans to premiere in 2015.
AMC's General Manager Charlie Collier says the massive success of the network's top-rated series makes the idea of a companion show “literally a no-brainer,” and plans on working with the creators to develop a completely new story, characters and cast (no mention yet regarding if/when the shows might cross over). “It’s a big world,” says Collier, “and we can’t wait to give fans another unforgettable view of the zombie apocalypse.”
Kirkman also weighed in on his excitement about the franchise spin-off: “The opportunity to make a show that isn't tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing,” he said. He also mentioned being very closely involved in TWD's fourth season (which premieres October 14th), and considers it the the team's best work to date. (We've also received some spoiler-heavy rumors from the show's cast, which you can check out here).
