Throw all your preconceived notions about the upcoming A&E series Bates Motel out the window because according to producer Carlton Cuse, the story “will not be what you expect it to be. This is a tragedy, it’s a fantastic dramatic form. We want the audience to fall in love with these characters, particularly Norman. That tension of knowing what their fate is and how they get there, was something we thought was really telling.”
/Film reported from the Television Critics Association press tour that Bates Motel will premiere 10 p.m. Monday, March 18 on A&E. Cuse explained that they aren’t looking at the films as canon, but rather as a jumping off point.
Kerry Ehrin went on to explain more about thematic elements via Deadline.
“She said the show explores an ‘obviously Oedipal, dark landscape’ but the series depicts violence against women as something that is ‘horrible and it shouldn’t happen.’”
