Unless they're of a certain age (I won't get into specifics), most folks don't really consider the genuine scare factor when choosing their Halloween costume. I'm not talking about making yourself as disgusting and/or anatomically correct a zombie as possible, or paying detailed homage to your favorite horror characters... because we've all done that, and we usually don't even bother waiting for Halloween. No, I'm talking about dressing up with the intention of legitimately scaring the crap out of people.
There was a time when the terror factor was the primary M.O. for Halloween pranksters and roving gangs of trick-or-treaters, as you can plainly see in this photo gallery compiled by CVLT Nation, an art & culture website specializing in all things macabre.
The gallery of crumbling vintage snapshots features kids (and grownups) decked out in grim death masks and masquerading as horned demons, disembodied heads and other sinister apparitions. Some are just plain cute, but others... damn.
Apart from the creep factor, the photos also capture the DIY spirit of Halloween costume-making that is sadly lacking in today's prepackaged commercial culture.
