The students and staff of Wellesley College in Massachusetts were both shocked and fascinated by a bizarre new arrival on campus last week: the creepy, uncomfortably lifelike statue of a sleepwalking man clad only in his tighty-whiteys.

Part of a new exhibit for the school's art museum by sculptor Tony Matelli, the unsettling zombie-like figure (appropriately titled “Sleepwalker”) was intended to be provocative... and it's certainly started some conversations at the prestigious women-only school.

Since its installation last Wednesday, the statue has been Instagrammed like crazy, and sparked a petition to have it removed due to complaints it might trigger traumatic memories of sexual assault.

But according to Boston's WCVB News, the Sleepwalker will likely remain in place until the exhibit ends in May; a statement from school officials says that the statue “has started an impassioned conversation about art, gender, sexuality and individual experience,” which was apparently part of the artist's plan.
