The Creepy 'Bleeding Tooth' Mushroom Earns its Name

After hitting you with a bizarre assortment of sea monsters lately, we thought we'd change things up a bit (for today, anyway) and give you a glimpse of a real-world monstrosity from outside the animal kingdom: a mushroom that seems to ooze “blood” from pores all over its body.

This article from EnvironmentalGraffiti.com examines a type of creepy mushroom named Hydnellum peckii – better known by the quaint nickname “Bleeding Tooth Fungus.” Found in dense forests in North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East, this mushroom can ooze a variety of different-colored fluids including pink, gold and orange, but obviously the blood-red variety is the most disturbing.

While it certainly looks evil, it's apparently non-toxic, although experts wouldn't recommend putting it on your pizza – it apparently smells awful and tastes even worse – but it has been found to have medicinal properties, particularly as an antibiotic. This just illustrates what horror fans already know: monsters can actually be good for you.
