Word came down from Blabbermouth.net recently that Norwegian black metal superstars Dimmu Borgir (whose incredible DVD set The Invaluable Darkness we covered not to long ago on these pages) are about to appear on the pages of what’s being called “One of the most brutal comics of the year,” entitled Dimmu Borgir: Dark Fortress. Find out more below the fold!
Dark Fortress marks the beginning of a new collaboration between the band, label Nuclear Blast Records, and comic publisher Terminal Press and will be the first in a planned series of comics inspired by Nuclear Blast’s most prominent metal artists.
According to the metal news site, the fantasy-horror comic – written by Terminal publisher Brian Ferrara, with art by Narek Gevorgian – tells the tale of three heroes who embark on a perilous quest to the title locale, which is described as being surrounded by deadly fields of lava, and according to legend is the actual gateway to Hell. The heroes “make their way across the treacherous path, encountering horrors, madness and death along the way. The three men will either survive the journey and learn the secret behind the legend of the Dark Fortress, or meet a most gruesome demise.”
Ferrara explains his enthusiasm for the Nuclear Blast collaboration: "I am artistically influenced and more passionate about metal music than any other genre or medium," he explains. "I wanted to bring metal bands into comics in a way that would do them justice. These are books for fans of the bands, but they will also be able to stand on their own."
The full comic will be published later this year, but in the meantime a limited edition preview book will be offered free at Nuclear Blast’s booth at San Diego Comic-Con.
