Marine instructor Jasmine Santana got the shock of a lifetime while snorkeling off the coast of California's Catalina Island, when she came across the dead body of a gargantuan sea creature measuring 18 feet long. According to NBC News, it took more than 15 people to drag the 300-pound behemoth to shore.

As it turns out, this scaly monster is an oarfish, a deep-sea dweller rarely found in shallow waters which can reach lengths of 50 feet in its normal habitat – sometimes at depths of 3000 feet or more.
It's likely that many sea serpent legends throughout history originated with oarfish sightings, and this may also explain the gigantic carcass found on a Spanish beach back in August.
