“A woman pleaded no contest to reckless endangerment in a case where she allegedly brandished rattlesnakes at police who were trying to prevent her from harming herself with a hunting knife.
Terry L. Jackson asked to be enrolled in Northumberland County's mental-health court, which would allow her to avoid jail while undergoing counseling, treatment and supervision. Authorities withdrew a second reckless endangerment count and a disorderly conduct charge in exchange for her plea Monday.
Judge Charles Saylor deferred sentencing to allow officials time to review Jackson's mental-health court application.
Jackson, 36, picked up two western diamondback rattlesnakes, a pigmy rattlesnake and two copperheads in her basement _ where she raised them for laboratories _ to try to keep Shamokin police from taking her into custody on Oct. 25.
She said she was despondent over having her children taken by child-welfare officials, separating from her husband of six years and drinking a six-pack of beer after three weeks of alcohol rehabilitation, and wanted to kill herself.
Police subdued her with a stun gun and took her to a hospital to be treated for snake bites. The snakes were later donated to a zoo in Hershey.”
